Photogrammetry as a Field Documentation Aid

Skills utilized:

  • Interior design

  • Photogrammetry

  • Field documentation

  • 2D Drafting (AutoCAD)

I undertook this project for a pair of Muncie developers who were considering purchasing the building and renovating it, starting with some apartments on the second floor. The goal was to provide them with a quick draft of what could be possible. While most of the field documentation was completed using traditional methods, I had the opportunity to use photogrammetry as a way to verify window opening sizes and placement. By simply taking a few overall dimensions (only one is really necessary, but more increase the final accuracy), I was able to make sure that the room sizes and wall thicknesses I captured from the inside were corresponding to the outside elevations.

While still a burgeoning technology, photogrammetry is proving to be an extremely versatile, adaptable, and accessible aid to the field of architecture.
